The use of typically found capacitors in Model T coils will quickly result in capacitor failure. Usually this is NOT because the voltage rating was exceeded but rather an important but rather obscure rating of the capacitor was ignored - namely the dV/dT rating. This rating must exceed 550 Volts/uSec and typically metallized type capacitors simply cannot come close to this rating. The "Orange Drop" capacitor we supply has a dV/dT rating of 700V/uSec. Simple rule is that if the capacitor you are planning to use will fit very easily into the box then likely you are using the wrong capacitor. Not all "orange drop" capacitors have this high dV/dT rating. This particular "orange drop" capacitor has been used in our coils and also has been used successfully for many years by experienced Model T coil rebuilders. |
